Susanville’s relatively high elevation and northerly position in the state mean winters are crisp and summers not as hot as might be expected in this desert-like environment. Annually and diurnally, the temperature swings are much greater in this inland city than anyplace on the coast or even in the Central Valley.
Poised on the edge of the Basin and Range, in the rainshadow of the Sierra and Cascades, Susanville has a semi-arid climate. Much of the precipitation it does receive falls in the way of snow between December and March.
