Chapter 11: California’s Urban Landscapes

Celebrating Our Cultural, Economic, and Political Centers

San Francisco is the most densely populated urban area in state.

A multitude of dynamic forces and processes continue to create dramatic change in California’s cities. These processes are often complicated and interconnected, but it is possible to understand them and even anticipate how they will change our urban landscapes. They include human population and behavior, economic, and political trends—from local to global scales. In this chapter, we will identify and examine such processes and then demonstrate how they have historically shaped and are currently defining specific urban landscapes.
